Day 1: Arusha to Lake Natron to Base Camp
- Trek Start: The journey begins with a drive from Arusha to Lake Natron, passing through the stunning scenery of the Great Rift Valley. After arriving at the base of Oldonyo Lengai, you'll meet your guide and begin the trek to the base camp.
- Distance: 5-6 km (3-4 miles)
- Elevation Gain: 500 meters (1,640 feet)
- Overnight: Camp at the base of Mount Oldonyo Lengai, offering great views of the volcano and the surrounding plains.
Day 2: Base Camp to Crater Rim
- After an early breakfast, begin the challenging ascent towards the crater rim. The terrain is rocky, and the air gets thinner as you climb higher. You’ll pass through ash fields and witness the volcanic landscape of Mount Oldonyo Lengai.
- Distance: 8-10 km (5-6 miles)
- Elevation Gain: 1,200 meters (3,940 feet)
- Overnight: Camp near the crater rim, where you’ll be able to witness the striking views of the volcano and the surrounding area as the sun sets.
Day 3: Summit Attempt and Descent to Base Camp
- Early Start: You’ll begin the summit attempt at around midnight or early morning to reach the top in time for sunrise. The final section of the climb is steep and involves navigating through volcanic rock and ash. The summit offers extraordinary views of the Great Rift Valley and Lake Natron.
- Summit: Reach the summit at 2,878 meters (9,439 feet), where you’ll witness the caldera and feel the geothermal heat emanating from the active volcano.
- After taking in the spectacular views, descend back to the base camp for a well-deserved rest.
- Distance: 10-12 km (6-7.5 miles) to the summit and back to base camp.
- Elevation Gain: 1,200 meters (3,940 feet) to the summit, followed by the descent back to base camp.
- Overnight: Camp at the base camp for a second night.
Day 4: Base Camp to Lake Natron and Return to Arusha
- After breakfast, begin the descent from the base camp back to Lake Natron. Along the way, enjoy the views of the volcanic landscape and the lake below. You may also spot flamingos and other wildlife near the lake.
- Once at Lake Natron, take some time to relax and appreciate the serene beauty of the area.
- Return to Arusha by vehicle in the afternoon, completing your 4-day adventure.
- Distance: 12-14 km (7.5-9 miles)
- Elevation Loss: 1,700 meters (5,577 feet) back to Lake Natron.
- End of Trek: Arrive in Arusha by evening, concluding your incredible Mount Oldonyo Lengai experience.
